The Long Tail of War Symposium

Remembrance Day marks the end of First World War hostilities. However, did the First World War truly end on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918?

The Long Tail of War Symposium will explore the aftermath of war and the stories of what happened to the soldiers and nurses who returned home.

The two-day symposium will feature individual presentations and panel discussions from historians, writers, journalists and curators covering themes on

  • Returning home
  • Health, wellbeing and medical facilities
  • Remembrance
  • Economic and social impact: the ripple effect

Picnic for Peace

Commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War with a day of food, entertainment, music and films for the family to enjoy. Take part in one minute's silence at 11am to pause, reflect and pay respects to the brave men and women who have served, sacrificed and suffered so we can enjoy the freedom we have today.

Enjoy performances from the Birralee Singers, the South Brisbane Federal Band (The Feds), Tim Jackman, a live reading of Elaine Acworth's My Father's Wars and more... There will also be guided conservation tours and fun interactive children's activities throughout the day.

Black Diggers screening with Wesley Enoch

Wesley Enoch will speak at both screenings of Black Diggers to provide us an insight into this special production. This broadcast was filmed in front of a live audience at a Queensland Theatre Company's production in Brisbane. The landmark, critically acclaimed production of Black Diggerstells the untold story of Indigenous soldiers in WWI.

Directed by Queensland Theatre Company’s past Artistic Director, Wesley Enoch, and written by Tom Wright, Black Diggers uncovers the contribution of WWI Aboriginal Diggers, following their stories from their homelands to the battlefields of Gallipoli, Palestine and Flanders.
